On to the next adventure...

This will most likely be a rather long post.  Scroll on through if you must, or grab a coffee (or a glass of wine!) and sit a spell.  It's probably a 10 minute read. I have been decidedly absent in the last however many months.  As many of you already know, I was not hired for the permanent position at FSW in May 2019.  It was very unexpected, and beyond disappointing. In spite of some wonderful travel adventures, (India in June, Japan in September) the lack of employment and direction in my life sent me in a tailspin. Depression and anxiety reared it's ugly head.  Even still, I must count my blessings....Len and my children, who have been incredibly understanding and supportive, are the first who come to mind. Next are some pretty terrific neighbors, Jerry and Joy, and Douglas and Rob, who kept me together and kept me afloat.  I have done sewing projects, painting, tiling and laying flooring to make ends financially meet all this past summer and fall. ...

India Day 2- My Sweet Lord!

Image
I enjoyed the quiet of the morning by having breakfast and a cup of coffee in the lobby. Sue, Wanetta, and Elisa arrived very late the night before, and the other three ladies are due in today. I mapped  out a game plan if the ladies were interested in a little Delhi exploring. I am always up for an adventure! With some help from our most gracious hotel manager, he hired tuk-tuks for us- away we go! Elisa, Sue, Wanetta and myself made our way through the crazy Delhi traffic to the ISKCON Temple, home of the Hare Krishna. I could not help but sing "My Sweet Lord" all through the place, lol. Construction of the temple was just completed in 1998, following the popularity of the Hare Krishna movement. It has three ninety foot tall 'shikharas'. This is one of the largest temple complexes in India, and it seemed like a good place to learn more about Hinduism, the third largest religion in the world, behind Christianity and Islam. Ninety-five p...

Welcome to India!

Have backpack, will travel! We took an interesting sharp turn to the south, and then looped  back northeast to Delhi- no flying over Pakistani air space 😳 After 32 hours of travel on three planes, I arrived in Dehli, India at 3:00am on June 7th- Happy Birthday to me! Navigating the Evisa counter was a breeze. With only my backpack and nothing to declare, I was soon stepping out into the night to search for my driver I had reserved. The heat and humidity at 4am was unreal. I was reduced to a puddle of sweat in no time at all. With the help of a local family who called my driver on What’s app, we soon got connected and were on our way. It was only a 30 minute ride to the hotel, and I was amazed at all of the traffic and people out and about so late at night. I quickly saw tent cities and shanties constructed of tarps, cardboard, and tin. Nothing like being struck by the poverty within minutes of landing. Many were just sleeping on the sidewalks next to emaciated feral...

Sanibel Island

Image
My students and I were chatting in class this week how the snowbirds clamor to get down here every winter.  Families vacation here in SWFL.  Destination weddings happen here in SWFL. Yet, we live less than an hour from a beach, and seldom do we ever visit. (Truthfully, the traffic is terrible here during high season.) Still, we take it for granted. We take the abundant sunshine for granted. We take the palm trees for granted.  We take the sand between our toes for granted.  We take wearing sandals to work each day for granted. We take the fresh squeezed orange juice for granted.  Shoot, we take it all for granted! I told my students I intended to do something about it this weekend, and today was the day.  I had a department meeting at the main campus this morning.  As I returned to the parking lot, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, it was 81 degrees, and Siri said I was just 17 miles from Sanibel Island. SOLD! I decided to treat myself to lunc...
